Chapter 19

On Thursday evening I pull up a pair of Vincent’s boxers—my new favorite items to sleep in—and watch him as I crawl into bed, slipping underneath the covers.

“I’m proud of you,” I say tucking the covers around me as Vincent eyes me curiously while he stands next to his dresser.

With his sexy steps that draw me into his web, he prowls across the room and stops beside the bed. “Oh really? I’m glad we’re both aware of how wonderful I am, but why this particular time?”

I laugh. It’s such a Vincent reply.

“You’ve known about the baby for three full days now and you haven’t sent a company email telling everyone.” I’m only half joking with him. It has been a valid concern of mine the last few days. Every time I opened my email, I clenched my teeth as I read over the subject lines.

Vincent laughs, crawling into bed beside me and getting into my space. He definitely isn’t one of those guys who stays on his side of the mattress. We’d told both of our parents about the baby and he was still alive, so this week was going down as a success.

Part of me suspects the reason my mother isn’t as worked up about me having a baby as she is about my brother is because in the back of my parents’ mind, I’d always be the one to disappoint them somehow. No one remembered I’d gone to college and then grad school. My success never took away from the accomplishments they expected from my brother. It only raised his bar.

An unplanned baby wasn’t out of the realm of what they had anticipated for my childhood. I’ve accepted the fact I’ll never figure it out either. At no point did I ever act out or get into serious trouble, but my parents made it known my brother was the smart one. He would be the one to get into any college—the child to make them proud. I blame it on the fact he has a penis.

Evan will carry on the family name and make everyone proud. He needs to be great. The fact he’d dropped out of college and decided he’s never going back had both my parents in a tizzy of a conundrum. Plus, he’s having a baby too.

They don’t have time to worry about me screwing up my life. I love my mother. She gave birth to me and raised me the best way she could, but at times like this, my heart aches for my grandmother.

When I was young, I visited her when I needed emotional support. Grandma Nana would sit me down and give me a firm talk about making responsible choices. When she finished, she would’ve given me an enormous hug, served me a cookie, and told me congratulations and then gotten excited about having a new great-grandchild to spoil.

Nana was the best grandmother a girl could ever ask for, and I miss her desperately every day. Unaware I’m lost in my memories, Vincent wraps his body around mine and places a soft kiss to the back my neck.
